Race and Equity Issues
"There are as many differences
in any group as in any other group, including your own
group however you choose to define your group. It's
just easier to appreciate the diversity in your own
group than it is to recognise it in groups you are less
familiar with" Gillian
Neish
Gillian Specialises in 'race' and equity issues and in managing and valuing diversity. Courses are, of course, tailored to meet each client's specific needs. For example, Valuing Diversity a one Day Workshop can be tailored for specific groups or sectors e.g. for managers or health proffessionals. It can also be run specifically for people from black & ethnic minority communities.
Typically a one or two day workshop giving an introduction to 'race' and equity issues would be as follows;
Objectives
The sessions are designed to enable the participants
to:
- understand the implications, for them
and their work, of the changes to the legislation
introduced in the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000
and of their Race Equality Scheme;
- recognise stereotypes and how they
can influence behaviour;
- understand how power inequalities in
society lead to the systematic discriminatory treatment
of members of less powerful groups eg. people from
black and minority ethnic groups, lesbians and gay
men, disabled people, women, etc.;
- understand how discriminatory treatment
can lead to negative behaviours which re-inforce prejudice
against members of less powerful groups;
- understand the importance of their
role in implementing policy to eliminate discrimination
and create a safe environment for themselves, their
colleagues and service users;
- consider good practice issues (including
in relation to different communication styles, naming
systems and language);
- consider the implications for them
and their work of working in anti-racist ways;
- begin to explore and develop strategies
to promote good practice and challenge racism and
all discriminatory treatment.
It is impossible to look at each ism
in detail in a one or two day course, so whilst the
focus may be racism participants are encouraged to draw
parallels. This Introduction course can
also be delivered with the main focus being a different
ism e.g. sexism.
Groups of twelve or more require two facilitators.
Gillian can arrange to co-facilitate with one of her
Associates, who all share her values and approach, or
may work alongside an in-house trainer who will have
in-depth knowledge of the organisation.
Peer group coaching is encouraged to support
participants to implement action points agreed during
courses. Neish Training can also arrange mentoring as
required.
Gillian also facilitates courses on specific
aspects such as:
- Dealing with Harassment, including
courses for listeners (confidential contacts)
and harassment investigators;
- Applying Equal Opportunities Strategies
within Recruitment and Selection
Courses for Trainers are also available.
